Introduction

    It has been awhile since I have written a blog and I thought it was time to get back to it. After watching a photo of a sandwich I had taken reach 50k views on a google review, I thought maybe people would like to see more photos of things I eat. My beagle Otis is portly like me and also likes to eat, so I decided to include him. The two of us also enjoy being outdoors and walking, so I felt including a walk along with a meal would be a good way to go. 

    If you happened to stumble upon this blog, I hope I deliver at least some content you like. Most of the spots I will hit will be in South Carolina. The hope is to do at least one post a week and if I see there is readership, I may try to start making videos as well. Included along with the walk will be wildlife or other nature related things that I see along the way. I do ask if you go to the natural areas I post in this blog that you do be respectful, take out what you brought in and do your best not to disturb wildlife. Enjoy.

Big Al's BBQ and Grill       Today's trip was local for us and the food was at a newer establishment that I have been to several times now. Big Al's BBQ in Summerton, SC quickly became my favorite place to eat in the area. The food is fresh and top notch quality. Unlike my previous posts, where I didn't know what to expect, I knew in advance that Otis and I were getting a good meal. I went in to order a Pork BBQ Sandwich with a side of fries and greens. I was told there were no greens today, but they did have green beans. I reluctantly went with the green beans and I will talk about those more down the page.      Big Al's does the pork BBQ on Friday and Saturdays. The meat is right off the pig and this sandwich is messy, but absolutely stupendous. You have the option to get it with or without skin on the side. I highly recommend you get the skins. 40 Acre Rock Heritage Preserve and the Kershaw House of Pizza

40 Acre Rock Heritage Preserve     40 Acre Rock Heritage Preserve is a place I had heard of prior, but I did not look up much information on before going. Just made sure there was parking, dogs were allowed and that there were trails. Otis never does any prior research. I chose to park at the upper parking lot, which is at the very end of Conservancy Rd. Other than the sign above, I didn't see any informational kiosks that are normally at the trailheads on SC's Heritage Preserves. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, so maybe there was one hidden behind them, but none right at the trailhead. Starting down the trail, the walk was pretty easy. From the parking lot the old road continues on all the way down to the exposed rock. It is about 0.6 miles from the upper lot to the rock. The Shrimp Shack and the Nature Center Scenic Trail at Hunting Island State Park

  The Shrimp Shack     This was an unplanned, just get in the car and go for a special occasion trip. We started our morning with a walk at Hunting Island State Park, which you can see and read about below, then we hit the Shrimp Shack. This is a location I have wanted to stop at for awhile, but often when I pass by it isn't open or it is just too busy for me. It seemed everything for the day worked out with perfect timing and when we arrived the Open flag was out and there was only one other car in the parking lot.  Menu on 4/26/2025      The empty lot did not last long and several cars and even a go-cart pulled in after us. A sign by the door does say dogs are not allowed inside, but they did allow Otis to sit out at one of their outdoor picnic tables. I don't know if they would allow this at crowded times.
